Menorca’s climate is ideal for growing vines for wine. Consequently, Menorca has been home to winemaking since the 13th century. Many of the vineyards were wiped out by the phylloxera virus, but there has been a significant increase in winemaking on the island in recent years.
One of the best vineyards to visit is Bodegas Binifadet. They have been producing wine since 1979 and are the highest producing vineyard on the island. They are also the only vineyard on the island that produces sparkling wine. Plus, they offer guided tours and wine tastings.
Binitord Bodega is another good vineyard to see while in Menorca. The winery is family run and produces up to 20,000 bottles of wine a year. Interestingly, the structure was built into an old quarry, to reduce environmental impact. Tours can also be arranged for this vineyard, and you can buy wine there.
Finally, Bodegas Menorquinas is a must-visit. This winery is located very centrally, just outside the town of Es Mercadel. It is also family owned and has been producing wine since 1987. Tours are available for this winery as well.
